      Mice and Mouse Accessories

As with keyboards, the mouse has undergone the greatest change since its arrival with the computer. The roller ball has long been superseded by laser light and the requirement for a black under-surface has thus been eliminated. More importantly, the common flat mouse has proved to be unhelpful where the risk of occupational overuse syndrome (OOS) may occur, or where it has already taken hold.

There is no argument that the mouse is the prime device to work a computer. Ergonomically, the mouse proves more efficient than the touch screen and even touch keypads and roller mice - all of which have only a limited demand in special circumstances. The research on mice has recognised the benefits when the forearm bones (ulna and radius) are in a neutral, parallel position. A vertical mouse will achieve this as it requires you to turn your hand into what is referred to as the “shake hand position.” This natural position is obvious when you stand or walk. Your hands tend to face inwards which again highlights the natural stance. Some mice also feature a DPI button which provides you with a choice for the speed of the pointer without having to access computer settings. A number of add-ons such as page up and page down bars are becoming more common.

Vertical mice can have as low an angle as 22 degrees and as high as the maximum of 90 degrees. The choice is one of comfort, although we recommend the higher range, as this gives the greater pronation. The more popular models come in wired, wireless and Bluetooth, and different sizes for small to large hands and where necessary in left hand. The Penguin and the Rockstick brands are ambidextrous.

The most popular vertical mouse is the HE brand 70 degree model followed by the Penguin 70-90 degree model. The Penguin has the added feature of being ambidextrous. Of interest in our range is the Penclic brand, which is the only finger-grip mouse.

We have a wide range of mouse rests and mats to support the mouse range.
